Jigsaw Puzzles have been around for a long time, yet they vary greatly from their cousins – 3d Jigsaw Puzzles. A master of 2d jigsaws will need to learn the tricks for the 3d version.

If you did not know already the major difference between the standard jigsaw and the 3d version is that the 3d version has a height dimension, not just width and length, which is something to keep in mind since you may have set aside room for your ordinary puzzle but forgot it reaches 2 feet into the sky. The result of the height dimension means that 3d jigsaw puzzles ship with instructions unlike the standard jigsaw. Think of yourself like an architect.

As you begin construction of your structure, you’ll notice little red dots on some of the puzzle pieces. The red dots are small parts that can be pushed out of the pieces and add a little flare and shape to the puzzle. The pieces themselves will appear similar to jigsaws due to the edge and inner pieces. Yet 3d jigsaws also have square pieces with straight angles. These are the vertical pieces that interlock to separate your art from everyday jigsaw puzzles. Decorative pieces may also be included and will go on last when the puzzle is complete to make your work official.

The strategy to assemble your 3d jigsaw is slightly different than a normal 2d puzzle. The puzzle pieces are sorted like normal into inner and edge pieces, keeping in mind the square pieces. The edge pieces form a perhymeter of one side of the puzzle and the inner pieces are the substance. All 3d puzzle are put together in parts with the edge and square pieces forming a smooth wall that tells you when a section is complete. It’s a good idea to make sure the pieces fit together properly lest you mismatch the puzzle pieces leading to an odd creation.

Once the sections are all complete the puzzle is brought together keeping in mind that the center is hollow and that being violent with it could tumble your project like a house of cards.
