  1. constant and instantaneous reward. Kill someone, get some points. Figure out a puzzle, get new stuff. The games reward you for doing well, and it feels good, so you keep playing.
  2. Well I haven't played either of those, but if I'm not mistaken they're MMOs. MMOs (and other games) use work/reward systems. MMO games are especially good at getting you to do certain tasks over and over to get a small reward, and enough small rewards make a large reward. Simply leveling up or getting a new item triggers a response in our brains that makes us feel a sense of accomplishment. The more "work" (in the case of video games, time) we do to get the reward the greater the sense of accomplishment. Everyone likes feeling like they've accomplished something important right? Video game companies know this and use it to their advantage. But hey, as long as we're having fun, what's to worry about? EDIT: I had to throw in that I really like two words in the first post. "Constant" and "Instantaneous". You constantly get small rewards to work towards your bigger one (EXP towards leveling up) and if you do something the reward happens instantly, which helps our brains link that action more closely to the reward.
